Dry Brushing 101

Great products will take you far when it comes to achieving beautiful skin, and there are a few things you can do to help them along. As far as we’re concerned, there’s hardly a better beauty practice than dry brushing. It offers so much for such a relatively small investment of time and money.
What is Dry Brushing?
Dry brushing is simply brushing your dry skin with a brush that is also dry. The most important rule of dry brushing is to use a brush with firm, natural bristles and to do it before bathing or applying moisture. Optimally, you should dry brush two or three times per week.
Benefits of Dry Brushing
Not only does dry brushing soften skin and prepare it to receive moisture, it also offers the following benefits:
- Detoxification: dry brushing speeds up blood circulation, which helps get the lymphatic system moving. This means toxins leave the body more efficiently and quickly.
- Exfoliation: by regularly removing expired skin you increase skin’s cell turnover for more luminosity.
- Reduces the appearance of cellulite: dry brushing is known to help plump skin for a smoother appearance.
How to Dry Brush
Dry brushing is both pleasurable and simple! The first rule is to be gentle with your skin (no harsh scrubbing!). Here are the general guidelines:
- Start with skin that is completely dry.
- Use your dry brush to gently massage your body in an upward, circular motion, beginning with your ankles and working your way up, in the direction of your heart.
- Maintain slightly firm pressure. Your skin should look a little pink as you brush, but not red.
- Dry brush just before showering or bathing (for an exhilarating, lymph-supporting, skin tightening experience, follow with a cold shower!). This sequence (whether the shower is warm or cold) is important because it allows you to rinse off expired skin cells.
- After dry brushing and showering, apply our Body Dream Cream for all-day, exquisite, skin-plumping hydration.
- Dry brush 2-3 times per week. Since it is energizing, it’s best to dry brush in the morning rather than just before bed.
